چکیده

This study successfully uses satellite altimetry, including Topex/Poseidon and Jason-2, retrieved by novel retrackers to monitor vertical land motions in Southwestern Taiwan. Satellite altimetry was originally designed to measure open oceans, so waveform retracking should be applied to overcome the complex waveforms reflected from lands. Modified threshold and improved subwaveform threshold retrackers were used in the study to improve the accuracy of altimetric land surface heights (LSHs) in Southwestern Taiwan. Results indicate that the vertical motion rates derived from both retrackers coincide with those calculated by 1843 precise leveling points, with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 and mean differences of 0.43 and 0.52 cm/yr (standard deviations: 0.61 and 0.69 cm/yr). In addition, wet troposphere delay by precise point positioning with the use of Global Navigation Satellite System data was employed to evaluate the impact of the delay on the estimates of vertical motion rates compared with that traditionally derived from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model when the microwave radiometer is non-functional over lands. The accuracies of retracked altimetric land motion rates corrected by wet troposphere delays derived from both models show no remarkable differences in the Tuku and Yuanchang areas because the accuracy of retracked altimetric LSHs is significantly worse than that of wet troposphere delays.

Louisiana Wetland Water Level Monitoring Using Retracked TOPEX/POSEIDON Altimetry

Previous studies using satellite radar altimetry to observe inland river and wetland water level changes usually spatially average high-rate (10-Hz for TOPEX, 18-Hz for Envisat) measurements. Here we develop a technique to apply retracking of TOPEX waveforms by optimizing the estimated retracked gate positions using the Offset Center of Gravity retracker. This study, for the first time, utilize...

Time-varying land subsidence detected by radar altimetry: California, Taiwan and north China

Contemporary applications of radar altimetry include sea-level rise, ocean circulation, marine gravity, and icesheet elevation change. Unlike InSAR and GNSS, which are widely used to map surface deformation, altimetry is neither reliant on highly temporally-correlated ground features nor as limited by the available spatial coverage, and can provide long-term temporal subsidence monitoring capab...

Validation and Applications of Near-real Time Altimetry Data for Operational Oceanography in Coastal and Shelf Seas

Near-real time altimetry products from ENVISAT RA2, Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon tandem mission are validated for the North Sea and Baltic Sea region to assess the feasibility of using the data for operational purposes. The coverage of the satellite data shows that all Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon observations in the Baltic Sea are currently discarded in the processing of the data. The spatial scal...

Measuring water storage fluctuations in lake Dongting, China, by Topex/Poseidon satellite altimetry.

Although satellite radar altimetry was developed and optimized for open oceans, it has been used to monitor variations in the level of inland water-bodies such as lakes and rivers. Here, for the first time, we have further used the altimetry-derived variation of water level for estimating the fluctuation of water storage as an addition to the present in situ water storage estimation systems to ...

Absolute and Relative Calibration of Ers-2 with Applications to Envisat

Continuous monitoring of the range stability is a pre-requisite for sea-level rise and other demanding applications in satellite altimetry. Range stability may be investigated by either absolute or relative calibration techniques. In this study relative calibration is undertaken through intercomparison against TOPEX/Poseidon and absolute calibration undertaken in the vicinity of 8 tide gauges a...
